What to Do if Youre Overqualified for a Job You Want
What to Do if Youre Overqualified for a Job You WantWhat to Do if Youre Overqualified for a Job You WantIs there anythingthatfeels more unfair than being overqualified for a job? Why should you be penalized for being too good? What should you do if you really want a job but are concerned that the employer will think youd be a better fit for a higher-level position? If you think about it from an employers perspective, it makes sense. An overqualified candidate may not want to linger long at a position, and employers like to avoid turnover. Employers look for candidates who are agood match for the job, and if your credentials show youre overqualified- or underqualified- you may not be considered for the role. Find out more about why employers avoid hiring overqualified candidates, how to adjust your resume to make it clear that you are interested in the position over the long haul, what to mention in a cover letter, and how to respond to interview questionsintheblogpostbelow. Why Is Being Overqualified a Problem? Here are some of the main reasons why employers shy away from hiring candidates who appear overqualified Theyre worried youll be boredCompanies want to hire people who will stick around and enjoy their day-to-day work. If you are overqualified, hiring managers may be concerned that youll get bored and leave for an opportunity that uses your full talents. They may also be concerned that you wont want to do the level of work the position entails.Or that youre after the job as a temporary meakoranversIf youve been unemployed for a while, employers may think that you just want to get a job- any job- on your resume, and that the position is intended to parlay you into another job that youre better suited for. As with the concern about boredom, here employers main worry is that you only want the job as a stepping-stone to something better. Theyre unsure youll be able to take directionOne other reason employers may avoid hiring very qualified candidates for positions that dont match their experience level is that these candidates may struggle to take direction from people who are less qualified on paper. And nervous the pay wont match your needsSome part of anemployers concern about your being overqualified may be a worry that you will want a salary that matches your experience level- and is well above the range in place for the job. Tips for Your Resume Your resume tells the story of your career. And while you should never, everlie on your resume, it is permissible to leave off jobs and generally paint yourself as a candidate who is at the right level for the job at hand. Here are some suggestions for resume strategies that will make you look appropriately qualified for a position. Make it tailoredAs with any job application, if youre overqualified, you should make sure your resume focuses onhow your experience matches the job you want. Dont delve into experience and qualifications that go beyond the companys needs for the positi on. Include your qualifications that are the strongest match to the job, and considerwhat you might leave off your resumein order for it to get a closer look. Leave off advanced degreesYou do not need to list every degree you hold. Leave off the post-college degrees if you think they are not necessary to get the position you want. You dont need to advertise the fact that you have more credentials than the employer is looking for.You also dont want the employer to expect that youll require ahigher salary because of your degree. Leave dates off your education Theres no need to includegraduation dates for when you attended university on your resume. Dates advertise how old you are, and your age can indicate that youre overqualified for an entry-level position. Remove some jobsYou are not required to list every positionyouve held. You canremove jobs from your resumethat make you look overqualified just be aware that doing so may make companies wonder what you did during those blocks of time. Be ready to explain during a job interview. Go functionalResumes can be formatted in all sorts of ways, fromfunctional(which is an achievement- and skill-based format) tochronological(which lists jobs by when they were held). A functional resume can help reduce the impact of your most recently held title and responsibilities. Assemble your functional orcombination resumearound the position you desire. Put thesummaryorobjectivesections to useThis is the best spot- aside from the cover letter- to tell your story. Some ways to take advantage of this section when you are overqualified are Put the title of the position you want in your objective section.Explain in your summary that youre looking to transition to a new career (this can show why youd take a position below your experience level).Avoid lofty language.Skip details about how long youve worked and your strong expertise. Keep it simpleExplain your career arc in a way that makes it clear why youd take a lower-level position perhaps youre in a field where promotions have led you to management-level positions and away from doing the work you actually enjoy. De-emphasize titlesTypically, job descriptions on your resumeput the title in a place of prominence, but that doesnt have to be the case. You could put the company name on the top line and list titles below. Use less powerful wordsIn general, the advice is to punch up language and usepowerful wordsto convey how much responsibility and leadershipexperience you have, but if youre concerned about looking overqualified, dial down your language and keep it simple. Instead of Spearheaded a transition to a new accounting system you can say you Helped manage a transition to a new accounting system. Expand Use Your Cover Letter to Explain Your resume is just one part of your application package. Use your cover letter toshow why the job is right for you, even if you could be doing something ata higher level. There are many reasons why you could be looking f or a career shift at this time. Perhaps youre retired but want to mucksmuschenstill maintain a connection to the industry. Maybe you have a personal passion for the position or company. Maybe you want to return to more hands-on work in the field and leave management behind. Use your cover letter to give details on your motivations and show how youd be a good candidate. Discuss Being Overqualified During an Interview During interviews, if the topic of being overqualified comes up, ask for specifics about why the interviewer has that concern this will allow you to give the best possible response. After all, your interviewer may think youre overqualified because you have a graduate-level degree, not realizing its in an unrelated field. Take some time toprepare your response to questions about being overqualified, so youre ready to answer. Above all, dont get discouraged if you keep getting turned down for jobs because of being overqualified. With changes to your resume and cover le tter, you can get past this obstacle.

A Realistic Tip for Achieving Work-Life Balance -The Muse
A Realistic Tip for Achieving Work-Life Balance -The MuseA Realistic Tip for Achieving Work-Life BalanceA friend left last week for a month in Bali and a week in Amsterdam. As she put it, I saw an opportunity to leave, so I took it. She is gainfully employed- a VP of an office design firm, in fact- and while I dont know how much of her time away will be spent completely unplugged, I think its obvious that this is a person who values work-life balance. For as long as Ive known her, shes been an ambitious, hard-working professional. She started at her company years ago, and though there was certainly a time when the vacations were few and far between and working long hours and pulling late nights the standard, Ive always admired her dedication to balance. Her huge career goals havent stopped her from capitalizing on lifes delights. Like most people who have a solid grip on the second part of the work-life balance equation, she recognizes that its not all one thing or all the other. Ther es a reason its called balance, right?I dont doubt that the death of her grandfather last year is what encouraged her to book her most recent adventure. In relaying her final days with him, she noted that he spoke of the importance of family and enjoying life, and not devoting ones self entirely to work.I think he wouldve valued a recent Medium post by Todd Brison declaring that, Your desk wont make it to your funeral. Neither will your Facebook account. In fact, unless you are very close, your boss probably wont either.Apologies for being morbid, but its unavoidable when discussing the value of living a fulfilling life. Because heres the harsh truth Work isnt going to hold your hand when youre sick or dyingBut your family and friends will- unless you neglect them in favor of nonstop work. Yes, there may be a period in your career when your job is your top priority, when youre working far more than 40 hours. As a result, you may find yourself shifting priorities. Relationships may e ven suffer slightly. So long as this doesnt become the norm, all is not lost when it comes to finding better balance. In fact, its never too late to take charge of your life and determine that work, while important, doesnt have to be everything. Im not saying you should start thinking about your own funeral and who may or may not be in attendance, but I am suggesting that taking stock of the people and things that matter to you beyond a fancy title or a big bonus is a worthy exercise. And if you cant think of anything, then all the more reason to stop in your tracks and figure it out. If you have vacation time, use it this year, without feeling guilty or anxious. If you have a chance to travel, take it. Unplug as best you can- if not for five weeks like my PTO-accumulating friend- then for an amount of time that feels like youre investing in a future that matters to you. After all, at the end of your life, the clich holds true Youre not going to say, Gee, Im so happy I sacrificed my time out of the office to send out a few more emails.

3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get Hired
3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get Hired3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get HiredRemember that time you had a job interview and they called you and left a message on your answering machine by the time you got back home? Oh, right, that was back in the 90s, wasnt itdefinitely a far cry from the reality of job searching today. It can become discouraging and disheartening when you know you have the experience, but you can barely get a response, let alone an interview or an offer. The reasons are many there was a hiring / budget freeze, the recruiter ghosted you, or any number of other obstacles in your way. Lets zoom in on the aspects, though, that are fully within your controlNobody Knows Who You Arebadeanstalt resumes happen to great candidates. Far too often, I see a resume that could double as either a doctoral thesis or professional obituary. A resume that merely lists what youve done is a resume thats more likely to get deleted fast.Resumes that work feature 3 key components who you are, what you do, and the value you bring in that order. Who you are is more important than what you do. The reason for that is who you are is unique in fact, its virtually the only thing thats unique. And thats what you should be emphasizing the differentiated aspect of who you are.If your resume opens with anything that smells like, Motivated professional, or Solid team player, or Resourceful manager, then its time to take a deep reflective look inside, and bring out the real you. Candidates who get hired know the real you is infinitely more interesting than that boring resume language. The real you is impressive. The real you is enough.Everybody Else Looks Just Like YouMonster.com is one of the most trafficked employment websites in the US. Indeed.com has surpassed Monster. And CareerBuilder is not far behind. While this is not a discussion about these specific job boards, the scope of job boards in general should tell you something theyre that big because everyones on them. When youre just one among the masses, youre going to get nowhere, and youre going to get there awfully slowly. If you decide to post your resume on a job board, dont then sit back thinking, If I built it, they will come. Thats what the masses do. Candidates who get hired do something different when it comes to the job boards. Use the job boards strategically to find out whos hiring. Then use your network to find a way directly in to that organization. This approach skyrockets your success rate from 1-2% to 40-70%.Just Anybody Is Not Going To Help YouUse this saying to fuel your job search forward If its going to be, its up to me. Certainly, professional assistance will give you a leg up, but you have to be the one to reach out, get it, and use the tools they provide the way they advised you to use them. Certainly, the right recruiter can be helpful, but you have to be the one who makes the recruiters job easy, by highlighting the skills the recruiter is looking for and keeping yourself top of mind.It doesnt serve you to blast your resume all over the Internet, then wonder why everyones not beating a path to your inbox. Waiting on someone else to do the major things in your career and your life will never serve you. Remember all those boring resume words I mentioned earlier that you shouldnt be using? Heres another self-motivated. Practically everyone says theyre self-motivated on their resume, but that doesnt always play out in real life.Be deliberate and intentional in identifying the organizations you like, the potential opportunities that may be available, and the real human beings in that business who may be able to advise you. That wont be just anybody. Zero in on the relevant decision makers, showcase the unique value you bring to the table that they actually need right now, initiate the conversation, and then wash, rinse, and repeat with the next organization. Is Success Due to Talent or Luck
Is Success Due to Talent or LuckIs Success Due to Talent or LuckA topic of ongoing, often heated debate, for generations, has been the relative importance of talent versus luck in the development of careers and in the amassing of wealth. Various studies over the years even have shown persistent differences in national attitudes. For example, Americans traditionally tend to believe that talent and hard work are the key factors in determining a persons success in life (or lack thereof), whereas Europeans tend to believe, by way of contrast, that luck usually plays a decisive role. Impact of Beliefs A persons attitudes on this question will have clear ramifications. For one, a belief that talent and effort normally the decisive elements in success normally will increase motivations to work hard and achieve. On the other hand, believing that luck plays an inordinate role is bound to blunt a persons incentives. Additionally, attitudes on this matter will shape perceptions of fairness. If you feel that luck is the more influential factor, you probably will feel trapped in an unfair system that is elend based on merit. Believers in the power of talent or hard work will tend to have an opposite perception, that the system in which they work is fair and meritocratic. See our related discussion about the value of advice from successful people. As described therein, such people to downplay the role of luck. Finally, ones personal happiness often is linked closely with ones viewpoint on this question. Those who place great weight on the power of hard work and talent will tend to be happier and more satisfied in life than those who believe that success, advancement, and wealth are more a matter of fate, luck or happenstance, with personal effort playing a minor role, if that. Moreover, your attitudes on this matter will influence your degree of risk aversion in career management, whether you live to work or not and the sorts of management models that appeal the most to y ou. An Experiment on the Subject Among the intriguing experiments conducted byColumbia University sociology professor Duncan Wattswas one designed to test whether superstar pop musicians owe their success largely to talent or to sheer luck. Watts set up a website with a collection of new, unknown songs. Visitors could listen to the collection and download their favorites, all for free. Some listeners got to see statistics on how many times each song had been downloaded previously others did not. Members of the former pool showed a clear herd instinct the choices of early respondents seemed to have a strong influence on those who chose later. Watts repeated the experiment 8 times, and the same pattern emerged. Alternative Interpretation Rather than an example of how luck can trump talent, perhaps Duncan Wattsexperiment actually shows how early successes or good first impressions can pay huge dividends further down the line, for people, companies and products alike. Persona l Anecdote on the Topic This writer is reminded of hisexperience in high school forensics (that is, competitive speech and debate). Judges tended to be overlygenerous in scoring competitors who had established track records as winners. You see much the same thing in sports. In baseball, for example, whether the umpire calls a pitch on the border of the strike zone a ball or a strike often depends on who the hitter is. If he isa star with a reputation for having a good eye (that is, excellent judgment regardingwhether a pitch is in the strike zone or not), itlikely will be called a ball. For lesser hitters, a pitch in exactly the same spot may be called a strike. You see this time and again. Bottom Line Lesson Get off to a good start at whatever you do, and you are likely to make your own luck in the future.

5 Legal Advantages of Registering a Copyright
5 Legal Advantages of Registering a Copyright5 Legal Advantages of Registering a CopyrightRelying on mailing yourself documents (poor mans copyright) and automatic protections, is leid the best way to protect your copyrights. The most reliable way to publicly establish your rights on record is still to register your copyright formally. Should You Register a Copyright? That depends on the work and the level of protection you want to have if someone uses your work without proper authorization to do so. If you are not sure, it is best to consult with an attorney who specializes in digital rights and/or intellectual property rights (which includes patents, trademarks, service marks, and copyrights). Some things simply are not worth going through the formal process of registering for copyrights individually (i.e., pages on your website are not worth registering individually), but may be able to beregistered as a collection of works. Why It Pays to Register a Copyright on Important Works Imagine how expensive and time consuming it would be if the government required that every web page and newspaper article or magazine spread ever written had to be formally registered to protect copyrights It would create an impossible situation for both authors, and the copyright office would be so bogged down they would not be able to keep up with all the registration applications. In pure legal theory, there is no need to copyright every original work you create in the United States because your rights may automatically be protected under existing automatic copyright laws. Automatic protection is not fool-proof, but it helps make protecting an authors basic rights easier and cuts down on government paperwork.? However, costs only run about $3545 toregister a copyright in the United States and registering important works could save you thousands of dollars in legal costs even giving you more legal remedies if you need to sue for infringement on your rights. Advantages of Registering a Copyright Numerous advantages exist for registering a copyright on something that is really important to you, and almost all major corporations routinely register their copyrights to anything that is available to the public eye. Makes It Easier to Assert Your Rights If someone attempts to sue you, trying to make a claim against your unregistered copyrights, it may be harder to assert your rights in court. Sometimes plagiarism is obvious, but it is up to individual courts to determine who came up with something first. Since anyone can simply date a document and slap on a copyright symbol (), you never know how a court will rule. Offers Temporary Injunction Rights A Certificate of Registration that is issued within five (5) years of the creation date serves as prima facie evidence (authentic proof) that the work is original, and is owned by the registrant of the copyrighted work. With a registration, a copyright holder can get a temporary injunction against som eone who might be infringing on their work. Permits Cease and Desist Letters fruchtwein infringement violations are settled out of court. Having a registered copyright allows the copyright holder to send a cease and desist letter that can include the real threat of further legal action should the infringer fail or refuse to comply. Right to Sue for Infringement of Copyrights In the U.S. you cannot even bring an infringement lawsuit against someone unless you have first registered your copyright. In some cases, you can always register a copyright and then file a lawsuit however, to request expedited handling will cost hundreds of extra dollars. Entitles You to Be Awarded More Money Perhaps one of the most compelling reasons for registering a copyright as soon as possible is the level of protection timely registration affords. If you register your copyright within three months of its creation, and you file and win an infringement lawsuit, you can be awarded more money. If you register a copyright later than three months after its creation date, you may forfeit your rights to receive statutory damages, as well as legal costs and attorneys fees.
